    Yes, Anthony, I've done a bunch of kilts that require short pieces cut across the fabric, instead of going the long way. Corduroy has to be done that way, and the "beach kilt" prints that I use. It's not so bad with 60-inch wide fabric. Sucks when you have to do it with 42-inch.

    I am curious about the "nap" you speak of. Twill generally has a diagonal grain.

    The proper name for this material is Commando Cloth,
    the weave is the same as twill.

    It's an inexpensive alternative to velour, used for studio backdrops and stage masking, also known as duvetyne or velourette. 100% cotton fabric with a light absorbing napped surface. Comes in 54" bolts from 12oz to 18oz. per yard.

    Being my first kilt I desided to use this because,

    1. Eight yards tipped the scale at 9 pounds.

    2. Has a good look and feel and,

    3. 8yds was $40.00.
