25 years in the U.S. Coast Guard. I was an Aviation Maintenance Technician and Flight Mechanic on H-65 helicopters. Our FM would be called a Crew Chief in the other services. I served with many fine people, flew some amazing missions, and saw a lot of beautiful scenery, including 2 tours in Alaska.

I was in the Air Force from 1975 thru 1984 and was stationed at Williams AFB in Arizona, Kitzingen Army Airfield in Germany, Fort Polk, Louisiana and Tinker Field in Oklahoma. My field was weather, which I am still interested in. The Air Force was a great time of growth in my life, and no regrets having served even though there were no wars during the time I was in. The best of all was that one colonel who shared Christ with me which changed my life forever. This was all wayyyyy before I ever dreamed of trying on a kilt. Well, maybe I thought about it once in a blue moon, since I do have Scottish heritage. But I found the one group that really has deep respect for veterans are Native Americans. Often when I have attended a Native get together, they honor veterans by having us stand. Cool. Anyhow, great to meet another ex military kilter.

Just to add my 2 cents. I served 21 years (1967-1988) on active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps, including an infantry tour in Vietnam (1968-1969). As our Commandant said some years ago, there are no former Marines, retired Marines, or active duty Marines - just Marines! And I still consider myself one, even though I've moved on to other pursuits. It goes bone-deep!
While I was on active duty, I served a tour of duty as a Marine Security Guard at the U.S. Embassy in Canada, where I had my first exposure to kilts (worn by the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa, with whom we Marines had social contacts), and kilts have interested me since then, to the point where I now have five modern kilts, and also (as a reenactor) portray 18th c. Highlanders of the '45 Rising period in period Highland dress.

6,216 days British Army. Left in order to take up other duties as a single parent. Lots of interesting places, many good times, many lasting friendships. I prefer to remember that aspect of it.
