My groomsmen would be expected to wear their own clan tartans not a uniform. I don't kidnap people for a day.
Edited to add: It's important to note that in Saxon dress I might well be in white tie and tails, so this is the reason for the level of formality.
My normal recommendation for the groom at a wedding is to consider one level of dress above the highest that you normally wear. Since I often wear a dinner jacket that means tie and tails for Saxon wear, Sherrifmuir & plaid for Highland wear. For fellows who don't even own a suit, I recommend a lounge suit rather than dinner jacket or tails. One level up.
