    I used some old truck springs for my stock... Probably 5160. Pretty forgiving steel in terms of forging and heat treatment.
    As for your farrier's rasp dirk-You can always use a hold fast, or something similar to hold down the piece while you're hammering on it. PM me and I can send images if you'd like.
