Doin' anything for St. Andrews?

St. Andrews Day is an eagerly anticipated holiday from work. The Monday nearest St. Andrews Day is nowadays the St. Andrews Day Public Holiday so St. Andrews weekend is a three day break for many. By co-incidence this year the Monday holiday actually falls on St. Andrews Day.
Many people treat the St. Andrews weekend as the start of the Christmas festivities with dining out and/or a Christmas shopping trip.
Wife and I will have a day out in Dumfries tomorrow (Monday), and will have a special meal out at lunchtime. Back to work on Tuesday.
I have to wonder where two previous posters who live in England got the idea that St. Andrews Day is not a big day in the Scottish calendar.

Our 2 sons along with our daughters-in-laws and grand children are coming over for haggis, salmon grilled Greek style, parsnips (they are not fond of turnips), lima beans and Greek lemon roasted potatoes. Kind of a Scottish/ Greek dinner to celebrate the patron Saint of both countries. St. Andrew is also the patron Saint of Russia, Romania, Ukraine, Poland, Constantinople and Barbados, so the food choices are varied. Maybe next year we will add pyrogies and cabbage rolls to the menu.
It is also Grey Cup Sunday with the Ottawa Red Blacks playing the Edmonton Eskimos for the Canadian Football League championship.

I will be going back to work after being off this past week on vacation and the USA Thanksgiving holiday. I will wear my Earl of St. Andrews tartan kilt but no one in the office will have any clue as to why.

Ten years of living in Scotland followed by 35 years of visiting relatives there.

St Andrews only became a public holiday in 2007 but most I know of are not celebrating St Andrews day as such but as you said using it as an early Christmas Shopping day.
I do know there are groups who celebrate the day, but generally it is a small percentage of people who do something special FOR St Andrews day. Rather than doing something they would have squeezed into a coming weekend anyway.

When I lived in Scotland St Andrews dinners were seen as something for the wealthy in the big cities or university groups ( also seen as for the wealthy back then). Nothing else was done by anyone I knew.

I kow the Scottish Society in Omaha has the St. Andrews Highland ball. It's a black tie event and a lot of fun, but due to scheduling is almost never held on St. Andrews day. I for one will be working so no observations for me.

Regular work day for me, so, what Jack said (fly the Saltire out front). I'll also wear my Scott Red flannel shirt to work. (I work in a warehouse, so it's a mite chilly in there these days. The only kilt in my possession at the moment is the band kilt, so it doesn't get worn for non-piping things, and I can;t wear a kilt to work anyway.)

I will be raising the Saltire on the flag pole of my new house. For dinner, I found a supplier that imports Scottish salmon, so that will be grilled and served with fresh veggies. Then my sister and I will retire to enjoy a dram in the library by the Christmas tree.
It will be the first time in a long time that I can just sit and enjoy the day.
