Hello From Glasgow
I guess I should start off by saying I'm not a native Glaswegian. More to the point, I'm not even a native Scot. I'm attending the University of Glasgow in a post graduate program, here from California most recently. Coming from drought stricken, heat wave embroiled California at the end of the summer was quite a reversal.
I've been lurking on this site for a couple months, thought it was time to log in and say hello.
The last time I wore a kilt was about 35 years ago as a member of my high school pipe band. I've been over to the UK a few times before. I got married at Kenilworth, which required my wife and I to spend about a month in country for the bands; we spent that time driving around mostly England, getting as far north as Dumfries, but no further.
I got the bug and decided I wanted to get a kilt to wear for Christmas this year. I'm on a student budget, so I didn't dive into the deep end for a regimental weight eight yard Kinloch Anderson. It'll be a 'standard' 13 oz in MacConnell (my mother's family) sourced through the good folks at McDonald Sporrans. I'll post pics when it arrives (getting close to the promised delivery deadline).
I also got the pipe bug again. I walked over to the College of Piping the other day and picked up one of their starter kits, and I've been playing with the chanter since. Funny how your fingers remember things. After 35 years not touching a chanter, I can execute a decent thrown on D without thinking about it. Reading sheet music again, though is going to be the biggest challenge. I'm going to start taking lessons down at the College in January when their new term begins.
I've also got a few questions that I'll throw out in the appropriate places; thanks for already providing many answers via the archives!
