Cap Badge on a Clan Balmoral?

A clan badge will be fine, alternatively try the clan plant badge which is juniper. Military badges are best worn with military kilts.

I've seen military tams with a swatch of tartan and a badge pinned over it. If you wanted tartan on the bonnet this would be an alternative to a full tartan bonnet.

It's tricky in the British military because each regiment has its own unique very specific way that the square of tartan is cut: straight or on the bias, and the specific portion of the tartan that's displayed.

this is how my cap looks at the moment for general wear , I do have a pewter clan badge that I swap out for occasions when the bright color is not so desireable 20160723_194651.jpg the feather embellishment is Scottish Red Grouse and I made it myself

These can be purchased. The TOS was the working dress head dress for the Scottish Infantry. All Regiments had their tartan patch on their TOS except the Black Watch because of their Red Hackle.

The one on the left is the Royal Scots TOS and the tartan patched is correctly fitted.

If I might just say, we are discussing civilian attire here. A swatch of tartan is perfectly alright for a military tam and the correct tartan and how it is displayed is laid down by regulations. A well dressed civilian does not usually wear a tartan swatch on his bonnet, or a tartan bonnet.
