Whilst wasting time on the internet perusing "stuff" I came across this collection held in the Melbourne Museum

I thought it may be of interest to Kilt History buffs amongst Xmarks.
The date of the kilt arriving in Victoria is confirmed so it can be put into historical & social context.
I find the buttons, leather strap(s) and ribbon closures fascinating from a construction point of view so if anyone has some information or can point me to relevant Xmarks threads? I'd love to hear about it from an historical context.
I just wish there were more pictures of the other items in the trunk.

A good demonstration of the original purpose of kilt ribbons.

Not so, the original purpose of the ribbons were as waist ties/fastenings. That was the standard fastening method pre-c1820 but they later became ornamental ribbons worn further down the apron.

Notwithstanding the claimed date, I'm not convinced that the cloth is pre-1840. The strap and buckle arrangement certainly looks to be more recent and are very crudely attached compared with tailoring of that period. It would be interesting to see pictures of the rear and inside of the kilt.
