One of the basic requirements of Barb's course is that you own a copy of "The Art of Kiltmaking" AKA ToAK.
I would suggest that you read the book from cover to cover at least twice.
Now I'm going to ask - Are you a kiltwearer? Do you have a full traditional style kilt? If you do not have a traditional kilt yourself do you have access to one?
What I'm asking about is a full hand-stitched kilt with the internal interfacings and stabilizers. Not a 5 yard casual kilt nor an acrylic import.
The reason I ask these questions is that it is sort of hard to learn how to make what is perhaps the most complex garment, next to a custom made man's suit coat, without knowing what one is or what one looks and feels like.
It would be like expecting to learn how to build a car without ever having seen one.

I wear the kilt because: Swish + Swagger = Swoon.

This works well for some people (like Steve, who is an engineer!!) and not so well for other people. Some people do better going from step to step and reading only what comes next. So, don't panic if your head swims when you try to read from cover to cover. But, I agree with Steve that it helps to know what you're aiming for. Being sure that you have an idea of what a well-made kilt looks like is a great place to start.

Thanks so much for the advice. I am currently working my way through Barb's book, and am finding it very helpful. I have access to an 8 yard, hand sewn kilt which I am using as a resource as I work through the book. You are right - having hands on access to a kilt really helps!

Kilt Kamp 2016
Steve I'm interested in Contemporary, either machine sewn or hand sewn which ever has room. I'd prefer machine sewn but can not bring a machine, as I'm flying.
warm regards

Kilt Kamp!
Okay, I've ordered Barbara's book, and am eagerly anticipating its' arrival. One little question. My cousin will be ordering the fabric (one of the MacNaughton tartans), and we don't know if you need a different amount depending on pleating to the sett or stripe.
I'm really looking forward to Kilt Kamp!
