I'm not sure which I find more annoying, "Are you scottish" or those who ask "Wheres you'r kilt" with a bad accent the days I'm not wearing one.

When six months old I was adopted, the womans great grand parents named Muir came from Scotland, the mans parents named "Di Liberti" came from Sicily.

So when asked "Are you Scottish", I reply "No, but my mother is" then walk away.

My usual reply is "Yes I am", and I try to find out if they are of Scottish Heritage. If they are, I hand them one of my business cards for the local St. Andrew's Society. I try to recruit.

First of all, Boston is a very kilt-friendly city. I always get good comments as I walk around, whether I'm in a tartan kilt or a khaki UK. Sometimes people just shout out, "Scotland!" or, "Hey Scotland!" (even to the UK, which I think is great). I see these as compliments, just a shorthand way of saying, "Nice kilt." Usually these come from across the street or as cars drive by, and you can tell they're not meant in a rude fashion. In response to these I just flash a thumbs-up to the person calling out. If someone actually says, "Nice kilt" to me, I give them a warm smile and a warm, "Thank you." So I have different responses too, with a different level of involvement depending on the compliment.
