Tossing the Torrie

Greetings Rabble,

Lets see if that title gets a few eyes to roll.

So I loved my Beret when in service. My wife loves the look as well. I know some here like the look and think of it with a kilt as a reasonable analogue to the Balmoral Bonnet but I am not so sure.

I like the look of the Bal but I hate the toorie (ball / Puff / Pom-Pom - whatever) It looks fine on others but I really don't like it on me. For the record, I cannot stand the "nipple" on the French beret either. It just seems to break the lines. That being said, what are the thoughts of the Rabble on the removal of said offending portion of this otherwise venerable headgear? I like the caubeen but is can be a bit large. The new Scot's Bonnets as seen in Outlander are quite large also but seem to lack the torrie.

Yep not a huge fan either.
Cut it off (or don't put it on if you make them)
Possible excuses ....
It fell off
It's an OH&S issue (Occupational Health & Safety)
The cat/dog/toddler ate it
I survived the Zombie attack but they took the toorie

I'm not one to judge either way, but I don't particularly care for them.
Further, I own a few of Gloria Holmes' 'scots bonnets' specifically because they are larger, and lack the toorie.

Here's another "idiot American" idea. I can keep the torrie on my Glengarry and keep my beret (lacking a balmoral) minus the torrie, to wear with my kilt. Others of us in disagreement, can blame those "across the pond people".

Some will call it lunacy, others will call it a new trend.

I lopped off my toorie and then hot glued a bit of Velcro to the puffball, I can wear my balmoral with or without the poof on it, I have a few other poofters in other colors if I decide to mix things up a bit, maybe a red one for a casual evening, maybe green when I'm at the games.....'

This thread made me wonder.
Is there a reason or historical significance for a Toorie?
I'd there a military connection?
Personally as a knitter, I think someone's nanna made them a hat and didn't cut off the threads, felted it and thought "that looks good... Wear it"

Nanna will find a way to make her grand-baby the most special child in the world. No one laughs long when the words (right before the school yard brawl) are, "my Nanna made this for me."

Does that sound like any Scotsman or Scotswoman you know?
