The Bible of kiltmaking arrived at Christmas and I've nearly read it cover to cover. Now I just have to purchase supplies and I will start on my first practice project : a kilt for the wee one. After that I have three planned for myself. While I wait for supplies to arrive, are there any sewing videos I should watch for stitches I'll be using? I am brand new besides sewing on a new button here and there. Thanks!

You'll find a glossary of stitches with diagrams in the back of TAoK, and you can use those stitch names to Google some videos. If I have time in the next couple days, I'll see what I can find on YouTube!

Congratulations on beginning the journey. I have finished two kilts and am excited about returning to Kilt Kamp to learn more. A kilt for a wee one might be an easy way to start. 8 yards of tartan can be daunting when laid out on your dining room table!

I also have 8 yards of fabric laid out, and YES, it is daunting. Barb, I bought Tailors Pride from Vogue Fabrics in Illinois. Is this the right stuff? I saw a discussion in another thread, and thought I'd ask.

I'm currently using a hair canvas available at B Black and Son at http://www.bblackandsons.com/heavy-w...ral-p-426.html

I really like this stuff partly because of the price (it's 72" wide!) and partly because it is a nice heavy weight (heavier than the Tailor's Pride, which I hadn't realized was actually still available).

Regardless of the hair canvas you use, you should use one that is stiff in one direction and flexible 90° to the stiff direction. Put the stiff direction parallel to the fell to keep the fell from buckling, and put the flexible direction horizontal, and pleat it to make the kilt flexible around the body.

I've never used something called "chest canvas", but Steve Ashton's good post in the following thread suggests it would be fine:

You want it as heavy as possible (so steer clear of lightweight or medium weight), and you want something that's stiffer in one direction than the other. This is typically achieved by putting the hair in the weft.

I'd ask for swatches - even if you have to pay for them, it will save you money in the long run if you can actually feel the "hand".

It looks a lot like the heavyweight Hymo that I'm using, although it's half as wide. At the price, it would be worth ordering a quarter yard to see what it's like.
