A warm Scottish welcome from middle England.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

My first kilt is a semi-traditional US Army tartan from USAKilts.com. I like it. They are a pleasure to do business with.

For this reason, I didn't want to spend a lot of money on kilts that will likely not fit me in a few months. Of course I would love to have a nice heavy wool tartan, possibly in American Heritage or Irish National tartan, but from what I have seen of the prices that may remain out of my reach, financially speaking.

I have so far been pretty happy with the items I've purchased, with the exception of spending money to learn that not all dirks are created equal. I purchased one that turned out to be simply decoration and the blade had no edge at all. Judging by the steel I would say it can't be edged. I am hoping to learn of a good source for a proper dirk and sgian dubh as I don't want to waste any more money on garbage.

Check out UK's wool kilts. Takes a while to get them, they're Pakistani (I think), but they're decent quality for about $90.
Also look at Heritage of Scotland's poly viscose kilts. They're currently on sale for about $50 but freight will kill you from the UK, however, if you spend more the $142 the shipping is free.
A friend and I just went in on an order, a Gunn Modern in P/V for me and a hostess skirt for her in Fraser Ancient Hunting in P/V. Together we beat the $142 minimum for free shipping.

As noted elsewhere I'm no a slave to fashion, thus I wear a canvas M-24 magazine pouch on my belt containing a S&W SWAT folding knife and Leatherman Sidekick.
I do this 'cause that's where they live when I'm not wearing a kilt and I'm a firm believer in consistency of access--I have occasion to use them both quite a bit.
That will probably change to a leather belt pouch when I wear the breacan mor from BonnieKilts that's due soon.

Hi and a warm humid welcome from sunny Queensland!
Since you say pressing or ironing is a problem, you probably don't want an acrylic kilt - they don't hold their pleats well. PV is your best bet and many members here will point you to Rocky at USA Kilts.
Be a little careful for the very cheap kilts advertised by Heritage of Scotland, some are advertised as PV but are a PV/Acrylic blend from Pakistan.
Regards, Sav.

Hey Hey, welcome from Arizona!
I find driving long distances in a utility kilt to be awesomely comfortable. For one thing, the pockets are on the side so you don't have to sit on your wallet while traveling. And things don't get all bunched up down there like with trousers or Levis. And it makes for interesting conversation whilst stopping for fuel.
Have a good one!
