The back is a flat brass plate and the leather is bonded over it. Those bumps are threaded inserts soldered to the brass that the belt eyelets screw into on the back.

After some more searching here is another thread which shows the M oD method of attaching the bag to the sporran. It may also give you some idea of the thickness of the leather used. Cheers
