It might work better if more common search terms were used in the Google bomb. I've used this effectively to place some of my own content above the actual manufacturers of what I was writing about in Google results.
Best thing to do is look at your referrer logs, see what people are searching for to find you, and google bomb using those terms.
So maybe something more like:
<b>X Marks the Scot</b> <a href="http://www.xmarksthescot.com">kilt forum</a>: A community of <b><a href="http://www.xmarksthescot.com">kilts</a></b> and their wearers.
EDIT: OK I know there is more than forums here but if you google for "kilt forum", Xmarks comes down lower on the search results than I would expect it to. That's the term I used to find this site, and I would expect it to be a popular query. It obviously could use a little boost in the results.
