Crowdfunding for Isle of Harris knitters

If you love Harris tweed and its associated knitted woolens, check out this crowdfunding opportunity to add a piece of equipment to the Isle of Harris production capabilities. Currently wool is sent to Cornwall for this step in the yarn-making process (or processed on a much smaller machine, with concurrent time requirements). If nothing else, think of the energy savings from removing that long-haul transport!

I ply my own yarn too - and it takes time to get it right for knitting, so the stitches don't skew.

At the moment there is a cocoon of white cotton waiting for me to finish knitting the robe of a Jedi so I can begin twisting it.

yes it does take time, but when it's plied on the big machinery it makes such a difference.

I stepped up from hand spindle to spinning wheel to a distaff with a motor off an old computer - you know the ones which are sometimes seen in older films with the huge reels of magnetic tape moving too and fro most unrealistically. The reduction in the time taken was quite impressive.

I expect that it is more the time taken by moving the yarn - having posted things to 'Highlands and Islands' as defined by the Post Office the time and cost proved significantly different to other parcels sent to places designated 'ordinary'.

Although I process the yarn I tend to make a lot of things on knitting machines - I have lots of them, of all kinds. If you ever want information about such things drop me a line, if I don't know the answer I'll know someone who does.
