Battle of Culloden's 270th anniversary to be marked
Battle of Culloden's 270th anniversary to be marked
Should be an interesting weekend. I'm fortunate to be able to attend. Who else will be going?

I am planning/hoping to attend again this year. It would be good to get the MacDonald of Glenaladale and the 1790 MacDuff together for a reverent photograph.

A good day for a simple somber memorial...not only for the futility of the fight that day, given the circumstances, but for the destruction of the Clans that followed.
'Bonnie Prince Charlie' didn't quite suffer the consequences did he....not an unknown theme.

Absolutely John. See you there. I tried to book a place for the afternoon lectures and they're already all booked .

You and others may be interested in a thread that I started here on 17/4/2010 called something like; "16 April 2010",(it might be "April 16 2010") there are a few pictures that you may find interesting.
Sadly Peter i am elsewhere at present so will not be attending. For me though, whilst I realise full well that 16th April 2016 is an event that many will mark at the battlefield, I prefer to attend and consider the event more quietly when the crowds have left.

I did suspect that the lectures would already be full. I am looking forward to seeing the new Visitor Centre though. However, I suspect that I will be frustrated by what I understand is a sanitised "middle of the road" interpretation of the events of the '45. I shall be very cross indeed, if they have attempted to white wash Butcher Cumberland, his genocidal acts and destruction of the Highlands which followed the battle itself.
It is a solemn, deeply powerful and meaningful commemoration. Just being there is enough. It will be good to share it with you.

It's interesting, I found a few errors in their text/story board. First they tried to tell me I was wrong, then that it was down to interpretation; and latterly, that they will amend it when they next revamp the exhibition - which won't be any time soon.
I also introduced the NTS to the fact that the Culloden Coat survives. I would have thought that they'd jump at the chance to try and borrow it from Kelvingrove (where it doesn't really belong). similarly the Culloden House bed hangings, but it all appears to be too much effort .
