I'm also a teacher; I'm curious to know if your district has any regulations regarding the kilt. I found out recently that mine does not!
My students (grade 6 English) don't say much about the piping. I think they are used to it! However, I am scheduled to play for our elementary grade kids soon, and that should be fun. Their questions about the kilt will be funny. My colleagues and the parents are much more interested.
I am not sure about district regulations, but my school is private, and they are fine with the kilt. I think they are going to ask me to play at more events. If I am lucky, I will start getting paid to play at some gigs outside of school.
