    Question Re:

I had no idea! Thanks, learned something here...
Pinned it on my hubby last night to see how it behaved.
Saw that the pleats were moving every which way, opposite directions (duh)
Not sure I liked it as much as I thought.
Definitely like the deeper pleats movements better!
Since I have to pin the whole thing over again anyway
(Started at the join but need more fabric on one end)
You think starting with a regular knife pleated kilt is the way to go?
    Thanks!

Question Hem or not? If so, hem before pleating?

The fabric I'm working with, has selvage at the bottom.
My question is, do I hem it or not?
If I do, do I hem before I pleat?
    Thanks!

OK, pinning is finally done to my satisfaction. Fifth time was the charm
Now. I still don't have the book -- going by this document for the order to proceed.

Next steps: Basting, pressing and stitching.

Hi and a warm welcome from sunny Queensland!

If you have a selvedge at the bottom, you don't need a hem. I think that less bulk looks better but your choice.
    Regards, Sav.

I am the Dutch wife of an American kilt lover, and at this time we are in the process of making our first 'real' kilt! The fascination started when we were invited to a wedding in Edinburgh, and hubby rented a Prince Charlie outfit. I have bought him a (tartan) acrylic utility kilt, which can be dressed up, and a duck cloth one for more casual occasions (hiking when we are camping etc.) and this week, we found a nice 100% wool fabric that we are currently trying to turn into a kilt. This fabric is not your standard tartan, something we are discovering now, isn't exactly making things easier! Here a few pictures of the process:
