Question Need Advice - Cutting the Pleats

    019.jpg
It's still a length of fabric, wrapped and held up with a belt at this point,
Hubby put it on just for the photo, to see how it looks and to judge the fit.
Pleats are hand sewn down the fell (the fabric is a nightmare for precision)
and the pleats are still basted at the bottom, and this is how far we are.

Next step, I imagine, is to cut away the excess fabric and adding stabilizer and lining.
I do not have the book (yet) so I am going by the instructions I found at:
    https://www.scottishdance.net/highland/MakingKilt.html

Still, I do have questions, like...
After cutting away the excess fabric, do you iron the pleats open?
How do you stop the fabric that is left behind from unraveling?
    Any advice is welcome, thanks!

No, you don't press the pleats open, and there's no need to worry about the cut fabric raveling because it is all covered with stabilizer, canvas, and lining.

    Thanks Barb!
You put my mind at ease.
It is terrifying to cut it!

    Question Where exactly attach stabilizer?

    020.jpg
With the fabric for the kilt, I bought a piece of canvas and I am using that for stabilizer.
It has some give so I am using it in the direction that does not stretch along the waist.
I read where it was advised to double up the fabric for strength, so I sewed it on the machine.
Now it needs to be sewn into the waist, but I do not know where exactly.
By the way - can I use the same fabric for lining?

I apologize for the uncharacteristically unhelpful post I made. Here is a better reply. If you search under "stabilizer" on the Forum, you can find lots on stabilizers, including the following useful posts:

Here's one that I wrote that shows exactly how and where a stabilizer is put in: http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...de-kilt-22330/

Thanks for the help Barb! I appreciate it. In the mean time we have made a lot of progress, even though I had to re-position the stabilizer when I discovered that the buckle was to attach above it. (my husband doesn't like any amount of rise, so that explains it). All that needs to be done now is attach the 2 straps, 1 buckle, and 2 fabric belt loops.

I understand it is customary to post a pleat shot and a "hamish"
Stand by for those in the next few days!
