If I hadn't actually had the oppotunity to try on of these on at the local Celtic Festival today, I likely would not have purchased one. I purchased the 2-Tone Black and Tan, and it looks REALLY nice. Fit's really good too.
RE: the ties in the back, they aren't actually ties, rather, they are elastic / shock cord, permanently sewn in. The size 36 I got (they updated the sizing BTW, now you just use the same number as your pants size) should be able to go up to a 44, if need be; lets pray that it doesn't.
I'll certainly be wearing this more than my Stillwater Economy I bought a few years back.

I've been wearing the "old" style Utilikilts for years and originally thought the new design would be horrible...
The more I see it, the more I'd like to try it. Just need to find a way to justify the price!

The lace up looks odd to me but I get where they are coming from. UT has a comfort waist that is doing the same thing. Honestly I like the Stumptown Kilt best for adjustability with plenty of adjustment, yet I like all the features of the Utilikilt Survival with the slant pockets, how it looks and moves. I will have to wait until Ebay gets them because they are too expensive for my liking new.

Two-tone: Ugh!
Expandable waist: Nice - I have one I need to get expanded
Returning to original front flap: Good- that cut-away version was UGH!
Pricing: still upper end of the utility market

I met a gent with an all black lace style utilikilt at the nj renn faire. I must admit i disliked the new style before seeing it in person. It looked much less "corset " like than i expected.

Not crazy about the look of the laces. Maybe if I saw it in person, but based on the photo I don't care for it.

I think the laces make it look like some sort of odd corset contraption.

The sewing nerd in me would really like to see one of these in person. I'm curious about the rear box pleat, and the rear apron that I've seen Utilikilts mention. I've tried to find a compelling reason to buy one but can't quite pull the trigger, since I can make myself a new kilt any time I feel like it. Still, the sweet siren song of the Utilikilt calls to me.

This is what I like about it the most. I didn't at first, but then something clicked in my brain and now I love it. Totally dead sexy looking.

I think the corset look changes depending on fit to wearer. If you get one at the large end of your size range, lace space will be smaller and less corset like . If you open the thing way up because you gained girth....more corset like. The difference in person is significant.
