You paid $ 150 for a sporran that has a vintage look, both in terms of age and style. Nobody would work that hard to create a counterfeit for that price. I would say you got good value. Whether or not it is base metal, plate or sterling, you can test for that.

I'm the proud owner of a 'fake sporran'. I find the title of the thread a bit humourous, as the only truly fake sporran I can imagine would be a mere picture of a sporran, LOL!

OTOH, I do in fact own a counterfeit of an L&M sporran. Those are high end sporrans made in Newfoundland that have some fancy designs. In hindsight, most of them would be a bit 'de trop' for daywear, but would not qualify as dress sporrans. Mine is different from the original in two ways, i.e. the leather is not as supple and the crest is facing the wrong way. Well, three. It was about a hundred bucks cheaper.

The genuine item was not in my budget, and it makes a fancy sporran for celtic festivals. I have no complaints. The leather is not as pliant, but the workmanship seems perfectly fine. Even then, the leather is still much better quality than that used in another sporran I own, and that one cost about the same. The other one, not even being a counterfeit, uses leather that resembles cardboard. At least my fake L&M is made of fairly good leather.

I know what you mean about the expense, which is why I like to pick up sporrans of the highest quality, but used, on Ebay.

They cost around what a new Pakistani sporran costs, but will last my lifetime, and look much better.

There are a half-dozen beautiful sporrans on Ebay right now by W E Scott Edinburgh at ridiculously low prices.

Great thread! Interesting information. I recently purchased this one:

I saw a similar one listed as a King's Liverpool Regiment sporran vintage 1930's for $350 US. Mine was missing the badge on the front, and was only $50 US. I questioned if it was too good to be true.
