As far as I can see the Edinburgh shop is still where it always was at the bottom of the High Street, confirmed by Google maps May 2016.
Geoffrey (Tailor) also had a retail outlet inside the old water tank building at the top of the Royal Mile. IIRC the building was bought by Gold Brothers who continued to lease part of the premises to Geoffrey (Tailor). I bought a kilt from Geoffrey (Tailor) in the old water tank building but that was five years ago and I seem to recall that since then there was some sort of fall out and Geoffrey (Tailor) intended to close his outlet in the water tank building and concentrate on the one at the bottom of the High Street.

That one at the top was kinda cool. It had displays of various sorts of Highland Dress on mannequins and struck me as more of a cheesy quasi-museum than a shop.

The dress shown was chock full of inaccuracies however.

I visited it in 2007 and I thought it was owned by Geoffrey Tailor as best I recall.

But yes most of the kilt shops were manned by turbaned bearded gents and carried only imported tat.

Geoffrey(Taylor) was originally Highland Crafts in Morningside when Geoff Nicholsby took it over in the early 1970s. Things don't seem to be as good since (son) Howie Nicholsby took over. He is much more interested in another (fashion) venture "21st century kilts".

I bought my first KILT at Slanj just off the mile. I have always had good expériences with them. I am returning next week for a fitting for a Lamont weathered. The staff were good, knowledgable and from what I remember good looking too! I was meassured at Geoffrey Tailor à Few years agi. Good but seemed à little less special than Slanj. Of course if you want THE experience kinnloch anderson is always à Nice placé to browse.

Regarding wearing à KILT when shipping in Edinburgh, I dont normally but my train journey and evening entertainment both require kilts in goth sagesse and evening wear alternatives so I am findning myself "forced" to roam the streets of Auld Reekie in the tartan.

    Happy shopping

The Geoffrey (Tailor) shop is still as shown in post #10 above and that is all there is now in Edinburgh. The others are apparently long gone.

The bottom of the shop has indeed been cut in two and you now go straight upstairs where the shop is back to its original width and quite deep.

I have to say I was disappointed. Only one person was to be seen, a man seated down behind a desk wearing smart but ordinary trousers and waistcoat, no evidence of any tartan to be seen. He did not immediately greet us nor did he get up when we entered. However once engaged in conversation, he was both helpful regarding tartans and informative regarding previous shops.

Surprisingly, he did emphasise that they have not strayed from their traditional Scottish roots and if I wanted a kilt made it would cost £350. I say surprisingly because their website shows a selection of 4 different types of kilt. I would be very surprised if they charge £350 for their 5/6yd Casual machine sewn football/rugby match ones. (Their description - not mine.) If they did, it would account for the lack of custom, but that price appears to be the approximate cost of an 8yd machine sewn ready made shown elsewhere on their website.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

    Kilt Shop

I did not go in, but the shop as pictured in post ten, was open for business on Sunday, September eleventh, when I walked by.

Yes, they have a shop in Princes Street in Edinburgh and also an upstairs dept. in Romanes and Paterson, next to M&S, also in Prices Street.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

We'd be delighted to have you at MacGregor and MacDuff. We're based in Glasgow city centre and we have another shop in Prestwick!

Now, I'm not sure they still make kilts under the new ownership but they are vendors of excellent woollen wear so I think it's worth a visit. Besides, the drive is pretty and so is the village. Enjoy!

Yes they do. They also make great tweed jackets.
