We still don't (oh dear that sounds political again doesn't it!!!)

Welsh was spoken up as far as Caeredin*, before receding into the current mainly Snowdonian bunker, hotly pursued by vast numbers of midlands "retirees and "holiday homers".

There are similarities to the Gaelic Dùn Èideann, Din Eidyn from the Gododdin, and more recent mythical stuff like,-

Dúnedain of the North, - descendants of the Dúnedain from the lost kingdom of Arnor...menfolk ceaselessly patrolling the boundaries of Eriador -

The Rangers were grim in life, appearance, and dress, choosing to wear rusty green and brown..

    All sounds pretty familiar.

*"Edin", the root of the city's name,- most likely of Brittonic Celtic origin, from the Cumbric language or a variation of it that would have been spoken by the earliest known people of the area, an Iron Age tribe known to the Romans as the Votadini, and latterly in sub-Roman history as the Gododdin.

Changing subject a bit, JRR-T book are stuffed full of Brythonic originated words, ancient Norse and such like.
Anyone with a decent working knowledge of celtic languages would see the clear links, and alliterations.
OT, I have a letter from him to me, in the late 60s stating clearly he would never ever have ALLOWED a film of any form to be made of his books, but HEY who cares?

Today people only care about money don't they!
