I couldnt agree with you more Jimmy. They used to be so good back when Neil Naderson was their piper and Ashton was the drummer. They tried to go POP and ended up bursting.

Ain't that the truth buddy?! I used to rely on Seven Nations for the neo-celtic sound. Unfortunately, they've decided to go with what "they think" sells CDs.
I see most the bands do this eventually... including two of my favorite local Philly bands.
For now, I'll stick to Gaelic Storm. These guys aren't only NUTS, but their music is still holding on to the original sound.

I just got the latest cd from Gaelic Storm.
It is terrific!
I have followed 7N since the early days.
The worst move they ever made was getting rid of
Neil. Closely followed by abandoning their
roots.
Rathkeltair is far better now than 7N ever was in their hay day.

Shame isn't it? All that talent... all that proven ability... all those fans... and they do THAT?!
As for the new Gaelic Storm CD, I LOVE the song about "A Pina Colata in a Pint Glass". It's FAR from traditional celtic... but Bwaaahaaahaaahaaa!!!!!
The rest of their stuff still stays within the bounds of wonderful! Make sure to read the liner-notes. Good Stuff!!!!!

OK so I went to my first celtic music show last saturday (The Hooligans) and I absolutely loved it. I'm a complete newb to this genre. What are the "must have" CD's?

To follow along the theme, I agree whole heartedly that Seven Nations has become a major dissapointment. With all the talented bands that are up and coming it is a shame that the bands that have blazed the trail are falling by the wayside. not because the newer bands are better musicians, it is simply that bands like Seven Nations and just as bad Blackthorn have changed the music and have gone pop. After all, people pay money to see these bands and the best they give us are bad Garth Brooks and Bare Naked Ladies covers (this reference is to Blackthorn)
Magnus - glad to hear you like the Hooligans, they always give it all on stage and put on a good show. If you like them you'll love Barleyjuice (www.barleyjuice.com) These guys know how to put on a show. I'm sure Jimmy will agree

LOL well when I "met" Jimmy online here I went to the Barleyjuice site and was sad to see no upcoming gigs. I'll definitely make it out when they start playing again. Looking forward to meeting Jimmy for real tomorrow night, as well as others from the forum.

Where to begin? WHERE to begin?
Let's start with a few links from our founder.
These pages that have a number of excellent musicians listed.
http://www.xmarksthescot.com/xmarket_music.php
http://www.highlandtide.com/links.php
A few I would add;
Traditional Celtic:
With an Irish slant- The Chieftains
Danu`
With a Scottish Slant- The Old Blind Dogs
The Battlefield Band
Tribal Celtic- Clann An Drumma
I heard their music described this way
"You have to move to the beat. It makes men want to
fight and women get frisky"
Finally just hold on to your kilt,
fun at the speed of sound, butt kicking Celtic music:
Barleyjuice. 8)
