My spelling has always been a mess because I grew up in a house where half the books were British editions. Many American spellings never looked quite right to me, and in some cases I forget which spelling is which. I'll never forget when a grade-school teacher marked me wrong on a spelling test, and my father went down to the school and let her know otherwise.

I found it very interesting how our first Harry Potter book, an American edition, changed all the British spellings and grammar (verb phrase ellipsis and such) but our edition of The Deathly Hallows freely mixed British and American spellings and grammar.

A noteworthy exception is that from the get-go the American editions left the British "ginger" alone thus popularising a new word in the American lexicon. I don't think until Harry Potter that many American kids (or adults) would have known what "a ginger" was.

    Not sheltered enough on occasion!

I remeber once seeing a color listed as "mongoose". My first thought was "which end?"

"Seafoam" is usually some sort of pale aqua, which looks nothing like what gets whipped off Atlantic waves, or piles up on shore along with the trash.

"Steel". Light gray? Dark gray? Blue-black? Silvery? Rust-colored?

    And so it goes.......

I'm with you, Jock. Never heard of her. I Googled photos, she doesn't look familiar, perhaps she's well known in Britain?

It happens all the time at work: the young women will be all excited saying "I just heard that ________ is in The Park!" (Insert name I've not heard of.)

    I say "who's that?"

They say "you know! They star in __________ !" (Insert name of TV show I've not heard of.)

Goes to show that fame is relative: these celebrities aren't celebrities to me.

These are the same young people, by the way, who have never heard of John Wayne, or Jimmy Stewart, or Grace Kelly.
