Crimean War era barrel pleated kilt

A lovely barrel pleated kilt from the Crimea period. Cloth by Wilsons of Bannockburn, it is the oldest surviving 42nd kilt as far as I know.

Not in detail unfortunately. From what I recall of the closure there are no buttons or ties (no straps at that date) and that it was probably secured with a pin or pins.

Note sure if the buttons had anything to do with the fastening, there's certain no evidence of straps on the front apron. It might be that they had some other function, securing a fly plaid or some such. Or perhaps there were originally linen tape ties on the aron. They could easily have been rotted and not left a visible trace.
