This, so much. It's really easy to go way overboard, or look like you're going to a leather bar, if you don't really understand what you're putting on. Some photos I've seen are just tragic. There's a bit of advice that's been repeated here many times and that's to get dressed as if you were wearing pants, then add the kilt. I think that holds especially true in the case of a leather kilt. Keep it simple and don't try too hard. The kilt will be plenty flash on it's own.
If movie-extra-over-the-top is the look you're going for then disregard this advice and knock yourself out. I'd go 20 eye boots, preferably steel toed, leather peacoat or similar, fitted pullover shirt, and definitely a wide, thick belt. A long, chunky scarf would probably be a nice touch too. All of it none-more-black of course. It might go over like a lead balloon, or everyone at the party will want to take you home. Hipsters are a strange and unpredictable bunch so it's hard to say.
