Feathers For My Bonnets
I am looking for a source for interesting feathers for both my Balmoral and my Glengarry. I've not had much luck in finding an appropriate article. Any pointers (sources) would be appreciated. The only thing I've seen to date are varieties of 'crafted' items (leather wrappings and lacings) on eBay.
Regards,
Tom

Hi Tom!
You are aware, I hope, that feathers in highland dress have significations of rank and lineage and are not decorative. That really limits what you should likely consider. There are also considerations of wildlife restrictions in many nations.
You may be on a tricky quest here.

Here is some guidance from the heraldic authority in Scotland:
http://www.lyon-court.com/lordlyon/242.html
Lyon's authority does not extend to the United States, but following this guidance is a good way to steer clear of petty squabbles which tend to erupt when the subject of feathers in bonnets comes up.
Besides, feathers tend to be a practical nuisance.

This is good stuff David. Thanks for the link. I have more complicated questions along these lines, but they do not serve here.
Thanks again,

Ostrich plumes on the other hand, do not have the significance of civilian rank. a couple of them in black would do.
In the early 19th century they were used in civilian bonnets, while at the same time being worn in military bonnets where colors and numbers did have rank. This is still seen today in the feather bonnets worn by some pipe bands.
