Nonchalant One-Handed Sporran Closure

It is possible that some of you don't remember Freelander Sporrans. They were one of the first advertisers here. For a while I was their N. American rep.

Yes, that is real Reindeer antler.

These were a modern take on a very old style of sporran. Like many things that have passed the test of time they were very practical. Easily opened and closed with one hand. I never have a problem at a store or with a coffee in one hand. The closure was simple, effective and very intuitive. You don't even have to think about opening or closing.

And they held an amazing amount of stuff. Even some of similar design that have come around since have lost the practicality and usefulness of the Freelander.

We sometimes forget that sporrans are supposed to be where you kept your stuff. They were supposed to be practical and useful. Innovative closure systems and no room for much more than a credit card is what this accessory has become today. It has become an accessory that is all about the outward look. It has become about making something for the highest profit margin.

I have run out of patience with my sporrans that require me to wear a band pouch in order to fit all of my pocket stuff. The Rob Roys hold everything, and then some.

I still wear a band pouch, though, because they are handy.

If the Freelanders were still on the market, I would probably order one. But now I have to consider: "How many are too many?"

The "enjoying myself" comments don't come from trying to close the sporran, but rather from rooting around in the bottom of the sporran for something that has slid to the bottom and been covered up by the rest of the contents. One of those organizer inserts or an inner pocket would solve the issue, but I never think of it at the time.

Exactly why I designed a sporran with separate pockets and compartments.

This is what is in there. And it is all accessible. No digging around trying to find your keys.

The Carry-All looks like a winner.

The red lining reminds me of Red Oxx, makers of excellent travel bags. They line their bags, like the Air Boss, in red so stuff doesn't disappear into a black void. Love that feature!

The Red Oxx folks, being former Army riggers HQ'd in Montana, may be able to help find a suitable producer for the Carry-All.

Please do keep us informed if you are able to procure a manufacturer for these fantastic sporrans again. I would love to add one to my collection!

Similar to others, I have the 'rooting around at the bottom of my sporran' issue as well, though, from my experience, this is due to the Rob Roy style sporran being stitched too tightly and, therefore, having too small of an opening at the top for my ape-sized hands to fit effectively into.

I believe that the best sporrans for one hand operation are the MoD functioning brass cantle ones with the push or pull mechanical locking knob. They also have the benefit of being able to have replacement bags made for them in any size, colour or material you want and with any divider system you desire. Bags can be changed over from the cantle in a matter of 60 seconds.A search of the forum will find many examples. Cheers.

Steve, are the interior dividers shown in this sporran typical of the ones you sell? Your online catalog doesn't show the interiors (that I could see)?
