I am also from Toronto, I would suggest looking at Winners or Marshall's or even going to a local Value Village. I have found several shirts with French cuffs at all those places. I have worn a light blue shirt several times with Highland wear. I like Jock think that a blue shirt and blue everything else may be a bit much, however I would like to see photos of the outfit with both shirts just to make sure.

A coloured shirt will not make it look to casual, remember this is day wear we are discussing. One question I do have is what colour hose are you planning to wear? Another question is where is the Burns Night? I might want to go to another.

I'll probably go with cream hose, but have the option of lovat blue.

I bought a new white shirt on the weekend - you can never have enough white shirts, right?

I'll probably try several combinations Wednesday or Thursday night and figure out what looks best.

One added wrinkle - I am missing one flash. Yes, just one. I'm looking forward to tearing apart the entire house tonight to find the other.

Alas, McMurdo, the supper is at a private club.

You don't have to wear flashes. Its certainly usual to wear them, but its not compulsory so to do. I would not fret over them not being worn if I were you.

Flashes: can fashion your own from any good quality and appropriate width cloth (and cloth-ish) ribbon. You only have to determine the length, cut, cut the "tails" on the end, fold over, give a few stitches to hold (heck, you could use a stapler - who's gonna see!?) and you're done. Just slide them on/off a flashes elastic. I've been slowly building on my colour choices this way.

I'll find them. They are either in my bedroom or in the laundry room.

And the fact that I can't find them at the moment is probably a good indication that I need to do a little cleaning.

    Tartan flashes

I've got a number of tartan flashes, and never wear them. (Well, I might with a solid-coloured kilt, but that's another story.) I thought they might have been useful hung around the kilt hanger of the kilt they came with, but they just got in the way. Maybe they will be keepsakes if I ever have to give up the kilt. Otherwise - useless.

On the other hand, I have plenty of different coloured flashes and garter ties, most of them solid but not all. Sometimes I wear the garter ties with the hose they come with, sometimes the ties match the hose, but I usually opt for ties that contrast, and I hope complement, the hose.

And you know what? The colour I choose most frequently is crimson - say 20% of the time, then down through, almost any blue with claret hose; black; deep purple; and an unusual green pair knitted for me by a friend.

    But that's just me . . .

if it helps any, I have just one pair of flashes, blue and they have served me well for as long as I can remember, probably 20 years or more.
