    Belted Plaid Belt Loop Placement

Where do you guys think the drawstring belt loops on a belted plaid should be, Inside or Outside?

Outside, that way the strings are over the material an act to hold it in place, a bit like a belt does. If worn with the loops inside then the material wouls be hanging off the loops and the stress would undoubtedly cause the loops to tear off over time.

I think both, depending perhaps on if you had actual belt loops, or just a drawstring. In the Memoirs of Masion Grant it talks about how a broad belt was passed thru loops, these would be on the outside. The drawstring I think was on the inside based on what I think im seeing in the Highland Chieftain painting, as it was just enough to get the garment around you, then you still belted it.

Peter in that one surviving belted plaid that you wrote up, was there any wear or damage from a plaid brooch that would clue us in to inside or outside placement of the loops?

I try to imagine the logic of wearing a garment all day during any activity. I would think the loop and belt would be on the outside to secure the material to your body. There would less movement of the kilt when the body is in action. Adjustment to open or spread areas of the fabric could easily be reached instead of fumbling on the inside drawstring or inner pleats.

This is just my opinion of human dynamics while in motion.

There is no evidence of plaid brooch being used but that's no surprise as the epaulettes are designed to hold the plaid in a way that would not have required a brooch.
