I'd agree with much of this, at least with it being difficult to make a great kilt look contemporary, or at least, not like it was part of a historical reproduction. I've seen a few examples of taking a belted plaid, mixing it with modern elements, and having the end result 'work' (in my mind, at least, probably not for many others). It does seem like it'd be tricky, at best.
For a Scottish Games, I think if I was to wear a great kilt to one, I'd probably be inclined to either:
1. pair it with something explicitly casual, such as a t-shirt and boots.
2. pair it with historical, or historically-themed wear (I find there is a difference between the two, but your mileage may vary).
Pairing a great kilt with a modern, collared shirt does sound intriguing to me. In terms of wearing them at a games, my guess is that you'd get complements and inquisitive questions at best, judgmental scoffs at worst. It's been years since I've been to a highland games, though, so I may be wrong.
Now for a metal show, I feel like all, or at least many, of the gloves can come off, so to speak, assuming a goal was to get compliments (and at least a few, profanity-laced complements! ;-) ). I'm a bit tempted to try wearing a great kilt to one, although, I worry that in the bustle of the concert, the thing would end up on the ground, and I really, *really* wouldn't want to re-pleat one on a busy concert-hall's floor.

I have worn my great kilt to several games. My avatar is from the Stone Mountain Highland Games in 2008. Many compliments.
