New Coat, What is the Consensus?

Bought this coat today, what do you all think? I found it at a exchange store and found it was almost the perfect length to not cover the sporran, though it's not an official Argyll.

Liam,
You will need to provide a better photo of you standing upright in it before we can give you some helpful feedback on it.
I will tell you this, your outfit will look ten times better with different (non white) hose and different shoes than sneakers.
Cheers
Jamie

New Photo
As requested, a standing photo. Sorry for the awful back lighting.

If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

That is a fine example of a Pendleton shooting jacket. My dad had one like it in the 1960's. I remember that the hem was shorter to accommodate game or ammunition bags. They were popular with the skeet shooters. Dad (being a tall slim man) liked the taper in the waist, the warmth of the wool during bird season and the "step up" fashion from denim and canvas.
It will be a great top to use with semi-formal events, and of course, an all season outdoor covering while kilting.

That's a nice jacket. It could use some tailorin to add a cut out for the sporran. Also, I suggest you take a look at the 1 kilt, 10 looks thread that our very own Panache and Mcmurdo put together as an example of how to look your best in a kilt. Coincidentally, Panache used a Blackwatch kilt to showcase his outfits. I know that thread helped me and I'm sure it'll help you as well.

Since you did ask, and assuming you want honesty, I think it's a nice jacket. But I'm not sure it's that great as a kilt jacket. The length is just a touch too long. Aside from interfering with the sporran when worn at proper height, it also seems a bit long around the sides and back (I'm extrapolating this from the front photo). If you look at kilt jackets, they are designed not to be any longer than the fell line of the kilt. I do agree that with a bit of tailoring, it could be easily brought up to the right length for kilt wearing. The patch pockets can even be shortened if they interfere with shortening the jacket.
Seems a shame to wear a nice jacket like that with a t-shirt, though!

Thanks all! How do I go about getting it tailored? Just show them a picture of an argyll jacket? Will they know what I'm talking about?

Liam,
I suspect that this would work very nicely for an outdoor casual kilt jacket. This is obviously a hunting coat which would make wearing it instead of an argyll for indoor events problematic
Here are some things I would that I think that will really help make this jacket come together with a highland outfit
(1) Leave the jacket unbuttoned! Kilt jackets are seldom buttoned and I STRONGLY suspect that in this case it will really work wonders with making it work with your kilt.
(2) Wear a collared shirt with it! (BTB: a turtleneck would look smashing with it)
(3) While I think white hose can often work with highland attire, this is almost always with a dressier outfit. With a hunting jacket I would want some sort of colored hose (preferable thicker than the ones you have)
(4) The sneakers just don't work with that jacket. I would say the exact same thing if you were wearing pants. You need a more solid looking shoe or boot to connect with the very outdoors nature of the jacket.
I have this really nice tweed jacket that wasn't intended at all for highland attire that I picked up in a second hand store. I saw in it the possibility of a sort of highland estate ghillie look , and I spy the same with your jacket.
Here is how I wear mine (though quite often I replace the shirt with a turtleneck)

I hope this feedback was of some help
Cheers
Jamie

Thank you Jamie! Your original 10 outfits thread inspired me to seek out the tweed actually! I'll be ordering another kilt from stillwater soon so I'll throw some colored hose into the order.
