Jimmy , there are hundreds ( possibly thousands ) of town , city and county names here in the U.S. that have Scottish connections .

During the first 150 yrs of the American Colonies / USA , the majority of the people were either subjects of the British Crown or descendants of people from the British Isles ... England , Scotland , Wales , Ireland and Northern Ireland and they tended to name places in a way that was familiar to them .

Just a side note , Donald Trump's mother was actually from Scotland , her maiden name was Mary Anne MacLeod .

    Cheers , Mike

Well yes that opens a can of worms that most people can probably identify with!

I had a guy from Cornwall draw a line across the middle of a map of Cornwall and explain to me that the western half was "the real Cornwall". What the other half was, he didn't say.

Likewise, I consider central and southern West Virginia to be "the real West Virginia". Half the population of the state seems to live in a small fraction of the land area, the northern panhandle and its environs, which is more open and rolling and Pennsylvania-like as opposed to the steep enclosed hill country of the rest of the state.

BTW West Virginia has two panhandles, the northern and eastern. Do pans ever have two handles? Shouldn't they be called Quaich-handles?
