Waistcoat ideas
At a local thrift store recently I found a Converse OneStar jacket, Dark Chocolate cotton twill with red satin lining, 3 button front, surgeon cuffs, side vents, ticket pocket, and tab collar. The hem is only an inch or so below the cuffs, so the pockets are more than. High enough to make a nice 2 button front kilt jacket by just adding sporran cut away and raising hem 4 inches. No pics as it's at my tailors now.
I want to dress it up sometimes though with a waistcoat. What color? What style? Always been A single breasted kinda guy, but open-minded. Most of my kilts are tartans based on the Govt Sett, if that matters.
Thanks for the suggestions!

In days long gone a man may have only one or two jackets. He would change up the look of his wardrobe with multiple vests and waistcoats.
There is nothing stopping you from going wild. Just your imagination. I personally have one dove gray, one deep burgandy, one dark mustard yellow, and one matching tweed vests for my single charcoal grey tweed jacket.
You don't have to worry or fret over using your kilt as the basis for the colors in the rest of your outfit. Don't limit yourself. I have found that if the rest of the outfit is color coordinated then you can wear any Tartan. Just look at a Scottish Wedding as an example. Everyone is wearing the same jacket, shirt, tie, hose etc. but each guy is wearing his own Tartan. And it works.

Hi, try looking at the site The Gentlemen's Emporium (just google it, I have obtained several waistcoats from them as I like the straight bottom style. When selecting a waistcoat, just make sure it is not too long so as to interfere with your sporran. Good hunting, cheers,

I spend more time in a vest (waistcoat) while kilted, than in a jacket here in Mississippi. Most of the gents from the South will wear jackets during the winter with or without a vest. The climate dictates our choice often.
My thrifty lifestyle (cheap and poor) lets me shop second hand stores, Jos. A Banks, Brooks Brothers, etc for vests of many colors and styles. Pick a material and color that appeals to you, then try to find your size. Alterations can come later if needed.
The stores I named are local or easy for me to find on the "devil-net" and not a direct endorsement.

Bamamedic,
I know exactly which jacket you found and it makes a wonderful kilt jacket! My wife (known as the Flame-Haired Celtic Amazon Goddess on XMTS) converted two of them for me. Their light weight makes for a perfect warm weather jacket. My favorite waistcoat to wear with both of them is a brown corduroy one that my talented wife shortened for me (also from Target)
Here are a couple of photos
