Tomorrow , Saturday 10 June, Glasgow hosts Tartan Army

So if anyone is visiting Glasgow tomorrow and they are looking for Scotsmen in Kilts, then tomorrow and tonight , Glasgow will be invaded by the Tartan Army.
Scotland play England in a qualifying match at Hampden Park.
Sometimes I feel that the Tartan Army is much maligned even by members on this forum but as a footsoldier I believe their behaviour is very good and that they could teach many people on how to wear a kilt in not only the traditional manner but also in how the kilt could show the world that it can be an ultra modern form of dress

I have to confess that football is not my thing Jimmy and I had no idea that there is a match between Scotland and England today. I wish them luck.

My personal impression is that the TA's behaviour is generally pretty good, but on the more wild side of enthusiastic and yes, they have even won awards for their good behaviour, but there is no denying that that renowned enthusiasm has led them into trouble over the years. More trouble than any other group of football supporters? I cannot say.

I am sorry but I have yet to see any member of the TA dressed in the kilt traditionally! They wear the kilt and yes many wear the kilt well in a modern style, but traditionally? No way!

    Hi Jock,
I waited till after the game to reply to you just in case there had been any trouble with either group of supporters but happy to say there was no trouble at yesterday's match.
At present trying to get over the terrible trauma of believing we had won the match only for an equaliser in the dying seconds.
Yes you are almost one hundred per cent right in saying that the traditional form of the kilt is forsaken in favour of alternative styles as worn by the Tartan Army.
Still I believe that the mass wearing of kilts at soccer matches despite what traditionalists will regard as almost an affront to good kilt wearing is indeed a tremendous advertisement for the kilt.
Where else would you get kiltwearers, young and old showing that our national dress is important in their lives, that when they want to express their identity as Scottish then this is the way to do it.
Jock have we not seen some terrible looking so called kilt wearers in some of these abominable new creations by so called Avant Garde designers who favour celebrities to adorn their grotesque designs in their search for fame, Alan Cummings is one example of a Scot wearing a kilt outfit I would not be seen dead in
One of our former first ministers embarrassed the world of kilt wearers a few years ago with his ridiculous outfit in New York.
Yes we can criticise the Tartan Army but is it not ironic to think that they in their raggle-taggle tartan outfits may be more true to the history of the kilt than our french poodle like celebrities in awful kilts

Your not wrong Jimmy. It may not be traditional in Jock's view which is probably more Victorian 20th century traditional. A lot of forum members here claim the kilt is is no different than trousers and shorts. So the tartan army does a fairly good transition of traditional to modern kilt wear with the traditional kilt. In fact they probably own the bulk of the Kilts in Scotland. When most scots typically rent their Kilts.
Some of the celebrities are truly crying cringe worthy.

Yes most of the Tartan Army probably own their own kilt. The advent of cheap and economic kilts from various outlets saw to this and I believe this was a great boost to the number of people who wanted to own a kilt. Yes probably at formal events such as weddings etc, kilts are hired and this is witnessed by the huge surge in kilt hire shops on almost every town in Scotland.
So these facts beg the question, with so many men owning their own kilt and every time there is a wedding in Scotland , there is a host of kilties attending, so why are Scots so reluctant to wear their kilts outside formal events and soccer and rugby internationals.
This year I have worn the kilt about fifty odd times, formal and informal times as well as hillwalking frequently kilted
