Hello everyone,
Based in Scotland and stumbled upon this wonderful forum whilst researching some pieces of vintage highlandwear I purchased for my two young sons.
In particular I'd love to pick your collective brains on a lovely horse hair sporran that I'd like to spruce up a little but am wary of ruining.
I'll now try to find the right forum to post my pictures and questions. Looking forward to chatting to you all!

Welcome, glad you found us.
If by "spruce up" the horse hair sporran, you mean clean it, may I suggest a visit to your local equine center. Ask for some mane and tail shampoo.

Oh hello!
Thank you for your reply. I wasn't actually referring to the hair itself, it's the cantle I need to work on. I'll post pictures later to explain.
Many thanks.

Vintage sporran repair advice
Hi all,
Forgive me if this is not in the correct forum - please advise and I'll repost.
I've uploaded a photo of my lovely newly purchased vintage child's horsehair sporran. As you can hopefully see, there is what looks like glue? damage to the leather beneath the cantle. I assume from a previous bodged repair but I cannot be sure.

I'd like to clean this up in some way but how? I cannot remove the 'glue' and feel I should remove the cantle and replace the leather. By doing so, I am worried I'll damage the sporran beyond repair, so maybe I should just accept it in the condition it is in.
Any advice or suggestions would be most welcome.
By the way, can anyone suggest an age for this sporran? I can't find a similar example online.
Many thanks in advance.

Hello!
I've just posted an image of my sporran under the title: Vintage sporran cantle repair help. I have no idea where this has been posted as I can't see it yet. Still finding my way around here! If it's in the wrong place, I'll re-post shortly
