Mountain Hardware Sale on Elkommando Utility Kilts

Just visited Mountain Hardware and they have discounted their Elkommando Kilts.

El Kommando kilts are probably the most comfortable kilts you can wear. I drove to Kilt Kamp 2014, 2,200 miles each way and never once felt uncomfortable in my El K. If it gets a little snug while setting the belt is easy to let out, and just as easy to take up when getting out of the car. My only beef is the belt is narrow. I'd like to see it a bit wider. I expect almost everyone who might see you in an El K probably thinks you're weird and wearing some kind of silly skirt. On my way out to Kamp I encountered some folks moving to Portland, OR who knew it is a kind of kilt as a son had a kilt shop there and he sometimes wore an El K. However i got a lot of strange looks. On my way back home I wore a tee shirt with an explanation, "it's a kilt. If I wore something under it then it would be a skirt." A couple of rough looking, middle-aged guys in Western Nebraska scowled , but I didn't worry about it. I figured I was giving them a story to tell.

Tempting but I have 5 so don't need any more. Hard to beat when hiking or trail running and as mentioned, driving.

Would anyone like to give some guidance as to how to measure for the correct size?

Good question. I was just going to go with the website chart. Perhaps Benning can provide some guidance.

Incidentally, I attempted to order and could not complete the shipping portion as it refused any Canadian Prov/PC. Have you tried? (I sent an email query to MH)

Edit: (update) Spoke with Mountain Hardware Canada. We can't order the Elkommando in Canada as the US warehouse does not do international shipping, and the Canadian Warehouse does not carry that item.

Yes, I think I had tried to order one in the past only to discover that they don't ship to Canada. Their website says that they will accept international credit cards, so if you have a friend in the US who would be willing to forward it to you, they will sell to you that way... just not ship it direct.

With my great timing, I purchased mine before the sale. As far as size goes the waist size, (small, medium, large, extra-large,...), fits true to pant sizes.

I just wore mine for a trial run a couple of days in this last weekend and really loved it.

So the kilt is designed to be worn lower than a traditional kilt at the hip? is that right?

Here's where I can let my ignorance really shine...

I've not worn a traditional kilt so I don't have a base for comparison and have only worn it a couple of times. It is much higher than where I wear pants. I have it already packed and loaded for a trip but will get it out in a day or two and see where it actually rides.

Perhaps this photo can help.

The top strap in this photo is at "Full-Rise" This is at the anatomical waist. This is where all kilts made in the traditional manner are designed to be worn.

The center strap is called "Mid-Rise" and is where many kilts that do not have the traditional flare above the top strap end up being worn. This is perhaps the most common place to wear the waist of a kilt, but unless the kilt is specifically cut for "mid-Rise", will cause the bottom of the Fell to be too low, and the hem to be below the top of the knee cap.

The bottom strap in this photo is called "
low-Rise" and is where blue jeans are worn. Most of the Utility and MUG style kilts are worn at Low-Rise.
