Thanks Steve! That's exactly what I needed to see.
I still don't remember where mine rode but I know it was not at the traditional height and pretty sure it wasn't a low ride but possibly between the mid and low. At least it started at that mid-level and may have slid a bit with the contours I have and am working at reducing.

I read a couple of reviews on the site, and their sizing and fit charts. I ordered both a M and a L because my measurements are on the cusp between the two sizes. If it is jeans waist then M might be ok, but only ok. From what I read it seems it sits mid-rise.
About mid-Aug I'll be able to know for sure

I also ordered mine--one of the original models in olive green-- when they were clearance priced a few years ago, from the US outfitter REI. They appear to have been redesigned, with a second cargo pocket and perhaps more pleats, and I do like the new grey color. They are good for travel because they are not bulky and the material is quite wrinkle-resistant, not to mention water-repellent and quick-drying, and I also like to wear mine for playing golf. A good, versatile and, at this price, less expensive alternative (especially for hot weather) to many of the other activewear kilts on the market.

I am not a utilikilt guy, but these are nice. If they had one in orange/saffron, it'd probably be the first utilikilt I bought.
Size wise, I got the feeling this was meant to sit around the jeans waist.

Received the M and L
i can wear a 34 waist jean, but the M Elkommando is just a little too confining. Could wear it, but the L is more comfortable/forgiving. However, I do have to cinch in the belt/strap.
Worn on a 8 hour road trip. Very ..very.. comfortable

I also did the M & L test. I wear a 34 jeans and the M was too snug.
L fits much better but needs a slight tug on the belt.
I'm 5'11" and worn at the natural waist (bellybutton vicinity), it drops to top 1/3 of kneecap.

Just for the heck of it, I've worn the M for the past two days while doing yard work. It actually fits better - in a way.
For review, I'm a 34 waist (jeans)
The Large fits slightly generously due to the 36, 38 waist. I thought maybe it might do well up at natural waist (which is 36) but the fabrication doesn't support that. It is very comfortable and wears "loosely". The cargo pockets sit back a bit far. Not much, just that bit that makes it a bit odd. Through the day of wear (road trip) I found I kept cinching the waist strap to keep it from feeling like it was slipping down. The pockets not loaded heavily.. just the usual stuff.
The Medium fits well the waist, but the hip size (38-40) is unforgiving resulting in a cloth not laying flat between the waist and top right apron snap - the appearance of a puckered pocket. Otherwise, its absolutely fine. Including the cargo pockets, which practically centred on the thigh. I wore it for two days doing yard work, some quite strenuous, and it was very comfortable with no sense of restriction of movement or any kind of binding up of the material.
The more comfortable fit is the M - with the L giving a sense of being a bit too loosely fitting and odd pocket fall. The issue on sizing the El Kommando, then, for me is the hip measurement. I can't see any place where it would allow for letting out a bit. I wonder if I would have the same fitting issue with MH pants - which I will look for locally to test that theory.

I usually wear a 36-38 pants waist (my waist measures 40"), so I bought a L based on the size chart. It was too small, so I went with the XL. The waist on the XL is just a bit too big but it fits well otherwise. I use the adjustable belt to keep it in place, but I have to use a safety pin on it to keep it from slipping and becoming ineffective.

Yeah, this Elkommando kilt seems to seek its own position at low rise.
I too am tempted to purchase another at this great price, but I already have 3 - olive (2) and shark (1).
I have most recently worn the "shark" in St. Petersburg, FL and Savannah, GA. In St. Petersburg I wore it (appropriately) for strolls along the beach!

I kept the M. It and my waist have found a mutually agreeable fit that has the 'pocket pucker' nearly gone. I've been wearing it practically every evening, and now during a deck re-build project. Seems to me to be considerably more comfortable stepping around and over joists and the like. I think I am also being kinder to my knees since there isn't the false hope that a jean leg will protect them. $ well spent.
