    There is a long-established thing in English called back-formation, where we take a singular noun that happens to end in "s" and remove the "s" to create a false singular, like "bicep" (biceps is singular).

    In the case of hose there is a ready alternative in sock / socks. But what about these: trews, trousers, pants, knickers, panties, jeans, tights, drawers and shorts?

    Since what we wear (or in some cases here DON'T wear) is a pair of trousers, there is no singular.
