I walked into a Glasgow pub once and was quite happy I did NOT wear the kilt.
Another time, we had a Glaswegian present the Immortal Memory at the Heather & Thistle, and he savaged everyone in a kilt (he wore black slacks); reprimanding us because Robert Burns was a Lowlander.
I should say, I have a couple of Glaswegian friends, and they are not shy about busting chops.

Well at least these stories did not come from my lips!
Glaswegians in particular and lowland Scots in general are renowned, on occasion, for saying it how it is, on first sight. Highlanders on the other hand are renowned for holding their council and the poker face----not frowns, grimaces or even smiles----- is their trait on first, second, third, forth---twenty first----fifty first meeting.
Yet again, with the benefit of JD's contribution it does illustrate well, that it is unwise for those outwith Scotland to assume that the kilt and its traditions are necessarily seen in the same light by the locals.

"United States Army."
"You can't wear a kilt if you don't have a clan!"
"I've bled for mine."
There was a short silence before he walked away. Probably still thinks I'm a jerk.

I am put in mind -- quite often actually, and not only around questions of heritage -- of this quote appended to Jock Scot's messages:

My response to your comment about being taken for a jerk: Maybe, but in my book the right kind of jerk. He earned the response he got.

Ah, but you do have a clan/were part of one/our oath never expires, he just doesn't see that. What better to make a clan than proximity, fraternity, common goals and leadership...and of course our clothes all look similar. Sounds like a clan to me.
The hielan' man he wears the kilt, even when it's snowin';
He kens na where the wind comes frae, But he kens fine where its goin'.
