California Revels - Scottish Celebration of the Solstice

I've been to the Revels in Oakland once, kilted of course! It was a very good evening of music and theater. They change themes each year, with something around the solstice and winter festivals being the constant. I was very excited when I got the email about this year's Revels--a Scottish Solstice Celebration!

I'm not affiliated in any way, but it's an entertaining show, with music, costumes, and a seasonal theme. If you are in the San Francisco / Oakland bay area in early-to-mid December, you should check it out.

I was able to attend California Revels--a Scottish Solstice Celebration last night, which was opening night. What a great show! Singing, storytelling, music, dancing, all set in a late 1700s "country" setting. A little bit of Burns, Hogmany, solstice, Christmas, waulking songs, and a couple of audience sing-alongs. All great fun.

I was kilted, as were several of the audience. A variety of tartans were worn, some with tweed jackets, an argyll, and one man in a jumper/sweater. One man was in a utility kilt. One usher was kilted and had a Scottish accent. I planned to chat with him during intermission, but ran into some neighbors who I visited with instead.

Highly recommended if you are in Northern California between now and December 17th. The show is at a beautiful theater in the Oakland Scottish Rite Temple directly across from Lake Merritt.
