My Kilted Roadmap.
So, where does one go from here?
I have given a lot of thought on this issue.
My next few kilts are something I have given a lot of though to.
Next kilt, for sure, will be from Rocky. I am hoping to get a Great Kilt from him. Unsure of which tartan. I wish he had Ancient Douglas. Black Watch is a strong possibility. How would a Black Watch Great Kilt look? Would it be respectful and proper to that tartan?
Next kilt? Unsure. I am not one for plan colour kilts, but I really like how Freedom kilts look. Don't take this the wrong way folks, but they look less "skirty" then some of the other plain coloured kilts. I am still deciding between a Pittsburgh Kilt or a Freedom Kilt. Most likely in camo. Mayhap both. Might try to get a custom PK in Carolina Panthers colours.
A Bear Kilt. I believe, the last I looked, he had Douglas. Would like a traditional dressy kilt done in PV. Old Black and Gray.
From there, I don't know. Will take me a long time to purchase all of these.

Hi D-N-M,
Excuse me asking this question, but I am curious as to when or where you would wear your Breacan-Feile, or great kilt?
This style of kilt, in this day and age, really is a piece of historical costuming totally unsuited to modern wear. It is also somewhat bulky and uncomfortable! Perhaps you are a member of a historical re-enactment society or attend Ren-Faires (something we do not have here in the United Kingdom), in which case I can see why you might want one.
To wear it to a 'dressy' formal function would be inappropriate since it is essentially a very casual garment.
I am not questioning your wish to wear one - I, myself, had one several years ago but, having absolutely no events to which I could wear it, I cut it in half and had one of the halves made into a very nice 'small' kilt. It's just that I am interested.

Winter wear. Mostly. Seems practical.
More men should wear them.

To push the point a little further...
...how is it an improvement over more modern designs using lighter warmer materials, sewed down pleats, etc?

Well, in that book, "So You're Going to Wear the Kilt" it says that more men should wear one more often.
I agree.
I have seen lots of pictures and I am quite infatuated with them. If you look in the USA kilts section, you can find my post. Big Question.
I like the look. Just something about it. Something that calls to me. Other kilt wearers think the great kilt looks out of place in the modern age, but no more so then a regular kilt. Did I mention I was utterly fixated on how they look? And I would wear it out in public, out to dinner, out to the coffee shop, out where ever. I think it's a beautiful simple garmet. Just something about it... Hell, I don't know.
I just want a full nine yard great kilt. It is currently my fixated object of desire. I just don't know which tartan I want.

That's a lot of kilt. Recall that we are talking about the full double-width fabric. I have found five yards to be plenty. Much more than that and you just have that much extra cloth above the belt, which you have to deal with somehow.
Note that when the great kilt was worn regularly, the looms on which the wool was woven were smaller (c. 27-28" width). To get the necessary width for a great kilt, you would cut a length of fabric in two, then sew the two pieces together along the long edges. So if you start with nine yards of wool, you end up with a kilt that was 4.5 yards long. With modern looms, double the width, you do not need that extra step. "Nine yards" is misleading at best.
Of course, if you are going to be outside in Alaska in the winter, you may want the extra coverage.

I'm going to have two bob each way.
I love the look of the Breacan-Feile and would love to wear one, but I have a hard enough time promoting the little kilt as "acceptable" without going that far.
If I was born in another age perhaps.
I agree that a little kilt would be much more comfortable.

Lots of men promote the little kilt. And that's GOOD! I believe that every man should have one and wear it. As often as possible. Men like you and others on this board are the bright and shining champions of making this an everyday thing.
My goal, I want to champion the cause of wearing a great kilt. I am utterly infatuated with how they look. I don't know what it is, just something that calls to me. A strong feeling. Even been dreaming about it. I believe it borderlines on an unhealthy fixation. Almost like I belong in one mayhap. And who is to say I don't?
I love kilts of all kinds. But there is a special hole in my heart for a great kilt. And I must fill it, or else spend the rest of my life wondering what it would be like.

There is a line I learned a long time ago as a cigar smoker that might apply here with a little modification.
"Wear what you like and like what you wear."
Personally, I think the great kilt is pretty sharp looking, bulky and hot perhaps but sharp.

I think you feel strongly enough about great kilts that you should get one.
If you don't like it, you can have it made into two modern kilts. If you do like it, wear it proudly, accessorise it correctly, and wear it as if everyone was wearing one.
