Yesterday, I received the tartan Argyll jacket and waistcoat combination I'd ordered from USA Kilts, which was a Christmas present from my family.

I'd been intrigued ever since I saw them for offer on Rocky's website, and thought the posted images (in a blue/green tartan) looked nice, but figured that the Maxwell tartan would be totally over-the-top for such an application, given its loud red, green, black palette.

I must say that the tailors did a fine job, and was very pleased to see that the Marton Mills tartan used perfectly matches that used in my now several-year-old kilt.

I opted for a three-button jacket without epaulettes, a single button cuff and a bias cut waistcoat with no lapels. I had them make up the combo with the faux stag horn buttons, but have spoken with a tailor about setting them up with convertible buttons (ala McMurdo's Wildcat tartan kilt suit — and thanks, Glen, for your input on this project!).

So, with apologies to Jock Scot in advance, here's my ever so loud Maxwell kilt suit (be it awesome or awful):

WOW ! Good on Ya' .....honestly it's a bit too bright for my liking, but from what I can see, it really does look great on you.....I'd like to see your hose, shoes .....and your face, I'll bet you are beaming You have a great example of wearing what ya' want and like, and I'm sure the pleasure that you will get from it, will be contagious to all around you.

You are right it is exceedingly bright but for some reason it almost looks better than an outfit of a darker tartan

I just finished reading “Scottish Tartans and Highland Dress”. In it, the author claims that any obeisance to modesty or simplicity in highlandwear is simply not Highland—that the Highlanders have always (historically?) been peacocks and loved gaiety and splendor in their clothing. To that end, he insists that everyone should be wearing dirks and plaids in the evening and that silver buttons are de rigeur.

Wear it with pride. Some day...I might join you. Until then, my next purchase will be a more understated navy Sheriffmuir.

It’s not loud. A wee bit red for my liking, but it’s the wearer’s call not for anyone else to criticize. Truth be told, it doesn’t seem to bother the badger, at all.
