Why couldn't the women just wear tartan skirts/kilts as well?
As Liam has already pointed out the colour is indeed purple and not pink. Purple can be used along with blue and white as part of Scottish sports teams uniform. The Scottish Floral Emblem is the Thistle in bloom and purple is the colour of the flower of the Scottish Thistle. Hence purple being used in the uniform. The photo also shows the male athlete having the colour purple in their uniform. The other colours, that is blue and white is taken from the Scottish flag, a white St Andrews cross on a blue back ground. As for the difference in what the men and women are wearing below the waist simply emphasises in this instance, a kilt is men's attire.
In my opinion this uniform is a vast improvement on the tartan and shirt that was used in the last Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
