Red face New to Kilt Making and would like to learn

    Hi
New to the forum and kilts in general. I’m looking to attend a kilt making course and have found your site. I’m a British expat seamstress living near Winnipeg MB and have recently become involved with Highland Dance SOBDH alterations, correcting kilts, kilties, jackets and jig outfits. I will be hoping to make up new jackets and, hopefully matching kilts in the near future. I’m not too sure if you have available spaces on the course this year if you have further details on course content, costs, where to stay, supplies and expenses etc. But your advice would be very welcome. Thank you and look forward to hearing from you soon.

    Hello ButtonsMB,
    Welcome to X Marks.
I am sorry but this years courses are full.

    But there are options.

First, the best piece of advice is to purchase a copy of "The Art of Kiltmaking". This is the text used in the traditional kiltmaking part of the course.
www.celticdragonpress.com or contact the author/publisher Barb Tewksbury via her ad found on the right side banner.

You may also contact me directly here in Victoria, BC - 250-386-5458 or steve@freedomkilts.com
Next years Kamp may be held in upstate NY, but no dates have yet been released.

Barb and I both offer individual instruction.

While the Kamp deals only with the construction of kilts some students learn kiltmaking from an interest in Highland dance. (Barb began her kiltmaking career as the mom of a dance student.)

    I wear the kilt because:

    Kilt Kamp 2018

    Thanks Steve
Appreciate your quick response, and yes, I thought I would’ve been too late to enroll this year. Your advice though is a fantastic start and I will be ordering Barb’s book in due course. I may take your kind offer to contact you if I am asked to complete a kilt alteration that’s beyond my understanding, thank you. I’ll keep a look out on your forum for the 2019 course in NY state and get my name on the list. Cheers!

    Quick question- length

I’ve no idea how I’m going to pleat my kilt yet and I’m having the fabric sent directly to Freedom Kilts from Laxey Mill in IOM, so I won’t get to see it in person until I arrive.

Is 6 metres enough? Or should I order 8 metres to be safe? It’s 150cm wide.

    Thanks in advance

    Spitting nails

Hopefully I can get the wife to come with to visit next year- IMCF tournament is in Ukraine and I have ZERO interest in the Ukraine so if there is another I will see what I can do instead.

This is why I tell her we need to go (back for me) to the US - more stuff to do, but they do have a Tartan Day here and Buenos Aires does it good I hear...
