Advice needed: Blair Atholl Highland Games

Next weekend we will be headed to Scotland for 10 days. We will be in Edinburgh, Inverness, Glencoe and Skye winding up in Pitlochry to attend the games at Blair castle. My intention is to wear my kilt at the Sunday games. Most likely the only time I will wear it while “in country”. Would like to hear the opinions on should I go for the full “day wear” or would it be suitable and somewhat acceptable to sport a jumper and either a pair of doc martens or brogue shoes.

I am a proud American and Texan with Scottish heritage and respectful of everyone’s culture when I travel. I want to honor that heritage and be respectful of my Scottish guests. Don’t want to come across as playing dress up or pretending to be a Scotsman but would like to wear the tartan associated with my family. (Duncan). Pitlochry is the home of sorts for the clan.

Would appreciate any direction and advice! Thank you, JW

Both would be aceptable and you will see native Scots wear both styles depending on their age, background, frequency of kilt wearing etc. Oh, and the weather of course. I plan to be there too.

This is what I wore the last time I went as it was rather hot. I am on the right and Jock Scot is on the left.

It is probably the games that I have attended the most as I lived in Perth and my boss is an Atholl Highlander.

No one is going to take offence if you are kilted. It is a rather relaxed affair, with people of all walks of life attending. There will be people in kilts, tweed, jeans, t-shirts, etc.

Scottish weather is amazingly fickle as almost everyone knows. The one thing often underestimated by visitors to Scotland is the sun! When it actually gets round to shining the temperature can rise into the 80's. I can hear you saying now, "thats not hot!". No it isn't, compared with what some of you endure, but, BUT Scotland has very little air pollution so serious sun burn is a very real risk. It even catches the locals out. Keep those shirt sleeves down, wear a hat with a brim and slap on the sun screen if you are fair of skin.

    Oh, wear the brogues, or-------------------wellingtons!

I will be there with my wife, her sister and brother-in-law on Sunday also. I might just break the Scottish Wildcat kilt out for the games also.

For those that might not know, some xmarkers wear a dandelion about their person, often behind the bonnet badge or in the button hole of the lapel to identify themselves to other xmarkers at gatherings. Some of us have artificial ones to cope with out of season---for dandelions---- events. However worry not, we have a bumper crop of dandelions for you chaps to choose from at the moment!
