One thing that I notice is that if you have a dog or a child (young, as in baby) with you, kilts are not really an issue. They either pet the dog or look at the baby with oohs and ahhs. Since you have either a friendly dog or a cute baby (which baby isn't?), everyone finds out that you are an OK dude, and the kilt makes no differrence, they are both great ice breakers.
