Another Texan!
Hello,
I didn't find kilts and Scots; they seemed to find me. My longest and dearest friend grew up in East Lothian before immigrating to Canada. The journey of how we met and became friends is long and convoluted but friends we have remained although the distance is great. She is the one who first got me interested in Scotland's history.
Many years later, I inherited my mother's home that was built in 1853 by a gentleman from Isle of Skye. He was a Gunn (maternally, Mackenzie). My user name is actually the first phone number to that residence. That's how the kilt found me. I made a utility kilt to sorta dip my toes in the water and then it was off to Locharron's website for some real tartan fabric. TAoK was the genius for my kilt making, but I often found answers on this forum as well.
I have one made in Gunn Modern and one in Isle of Skye. They are as authentic as I could possibly make them. I wear my IoS every chance I get. Although going by the wine store in Houston in a kilt with Argyle jacket on the way to a Christmas party does raise a few brows.
Yesterday, I ordered MacDougall Modern Tartan for a kilt to honor my friend in Canada. Even after two kilts, I am sure I will have a question or two. Trying to figure the splits in the kilt turn me into a quivering blob...
Hope everyone has a great week!
